“There’s A New Boom In Town” appeared in the April 2024 issue of Crane Hot Line. The article focuses on the long-term collaboration between BRADEN and Manitex, recently launching its new TC85159 truck-mounted crane with a PD21C hydraulic planetary hoist.
Crane operators face a variety of unique challenges in the field, particularly centered on needs for hoisting power, stability and precision when working in tight spaces or environments that require high-reach capabilities, such as utilities and construction.
Manitex has built a reputation for delivering versatile and durable equipment tailored to diverse markets. Among their extensive product lineup is the TC850 Series, recently expanded with the introduction of the TC85159—a truck-mounted crane that boasts an 85-ton base rating and a 159-foot full power, proportionally extended boom in five sections.
The TC85159’s launch signals Manitex’s ongoing commitment to quality and innovation to meet the high expectations of crane operators.
Specifically, Manitex integrated the BRADEN PD21C hydraulic planetary hoist into their new crane, leveraging the proven performance and dependability of BRADEN products for demanding applications.
Mobile cranes operate in segments ranging from utilities and telecom to road and bridge work, erecting signs and roadside billboards, construction projects, and many others.
Lifting capacity and maneuverability combined with ease of use and precision lifting are paramount. Operators depend on cranes that can lift heavy loads without compromising stability or control, reaching difficult angles and great heights. They require consistent hoisting power and systems that can deliver continuous performance under high-duty cycle applications.
The TC85159 was developed to meet the stringent demands of modern lifting applications, featuring an advanced boom design ensuring optimal stiffness and control, particularly in long-reach applications.
The PD21C hoist, with a rated line pull of 21,000 lb (9,525 kg), features a sealed, high-efficiency gear system located inside the drum barrel. Dynamic and multi-disc static brake systems and an overrunning clutch provide outstanding fall-back protection and fail-safe load handling. These features allow for continuous duty performance and maximum installation versatility.
The crane has non-equal swing out and out-and-down outriggers that provide superior ground penetration. It allows for quick setups in more confined spaces and on uneven terrain and eliminates the need for a front/fifth outrigger, which enhances maneuverability.
This makes the TC8519 ideal for operators who require hoisting power, precision and durability at extended heights.
The TC85159, with its innovative design and advanced features, was designed to address the critical challenges of high-reach performance, maneuverability, and reliable hoisting power. The BRADEN PD21C hoist integration ensures that the crane can handle heavy loads with precision and safety, even in the most demanding conditions.
Additionally, standard remote crane hoist control capabilities allow a single person at the front bumper to deploy and stow the hook from a secure distance. This also reduces fatigue associated with repeatedly having to climb in and out of the machine. With optional 4-function radio remotes, TC85159 operators can also take advantage of proper elevations and vantage points for seamless visibility and control.
From their truck-mounted cranes to aerial work platforms and specialized equipment used across multiple industries, Manitex continually seeks to enhance their product offerings to meet the evolving needs of operators.
The TC85159 is specified for a ¾” (19 mm) diameter load line with the BRADEN PD21C hoist in this configuration. A grooved drum on the PD Series hoist offers improved spooling and increased rope life. Negative draft angle machine flanges help prevent the cable from spooling incorrectly. Additionally, a hoist drum rotation indicator provides for increased operator confidence.
The collaboration between Manitex and BRADEN, spanning over three decades, underscores the value of a long-term working relationship built on developing high-performance crane hoist capabilities. The TC85159’s ability to deliver high-reach performance, combined with its ease of operation and reliability, has made it a go-to solution for operators in industries where a versatile and powerful mobile crane is important.
Randy Robertson, Manitex:
“There are front-end engineering discussions on both sides, targeting our specifications for gear ratios, line pull rating, line speed of the hook, rope sizing, how many feet of rope, how the layers will perform, et cetera.”
“The quality that goes into the product is very good, the product support is good.”
“We have found over the years that the BRADEN name stays in demand – they still ask for it by name. We believe in it. Customers come back for BRADEN.”
Multiple industry segments that leverage the use of cranes are expected to drive growth in the boom truck equipment segment, according to market analysis by Grandview Research. Infrastructure development and urbanization continue to push demand for robust and reliable mobile crane solutions.
The cyclical nature of the market, coupled with aging utilities and infrastructure, underscores the importance of helping operators be better prepared and more efficient when they are at the controls. The ability to move easily between jobs and leverage the use of heavy duty cranes on multiple worksites can represent a tremendous value in the field.
Manitex is a global provider of highly engineered mobile cranes including truck-mounted cranes, aerial work platforms, and specialized equipment. The TC85159, which has been highlighted as the largest crane mounted on a commercial carrier and offered for sale in North America, is well-positioned to play a key role in helping operators tackle the challenges of high reach lifting with confidence and efficiency.
